H2 & O-Level Chemistry

One student at a time, or three at most: at your home, at my study near Bukit Timah, or online. Places for 2027 are open.

A page from my notes

Every student gets the full bound set: thirty-one topics, about four hundred pages.

The mole, in three lines

1. moles = mass ÷ molar mass   (n = m / M)

2. moles = concentration × volume   (n = cV)

3. moles of gas = volume ÷ 24 dm3*

Example. How many moles in 4.0 g of NaOH?

M = 23 + 16 + 1 = 40 g mol−1

n = 4.0 ÷ 40 = 0.10 mol

* at room temperature and pressure. Learn these three lines and you can do every mole question in Paper 2.

O-Level notes, topic 4: the mole.

Energy profile: an exothermic reaction

A catalyst lowers the hump. It does not move the ends.

Each topic, rewritten by the student on one page. This one belongs to a JC2 student.

The tutor

I read chemistry because a Sec 3 teacher once set fire to a balloon of hydrogen in front of us. I have been trying to give students that same small jolt ever since.

After a first-class degree and teacher training at NIE, I taught H2 Chemistry at a junior college for four years1. Since 2011 I have taught one student at a time, with enough hours to find the exact line where understanding stopped.

Most students who come to me are not weak at chemistry. They have been taught to memorise it. We go back to first principles until the reasons are obvious, then practise until the marks follow.

  1. I will not say which one. My former students will know.

The method

Four steps, in order. We do not skip ahead.

  1. Diagnose

A 45-minute paper on the topics your child fears most, marked in front of them, line by line. Usually it is fewer things than they think.

  2. Rebuild

Back to the mole, to bonding, to energy. Most lost marks in H2 trace back to one of the three, learnt too quickly in Sec 3.

  3. Practise

Timed questions from ten years of A-Level and prelim papers, sorted by topic first, then mixed the way the real paper mixes them.

  4. Review

Every script comes back within 48 hours in red ink, with one sentence at the top: the single thing to fix next. Parents get the same sentence.

Diagnosing: the pen points to the line where the working went wrong.
Floor-to-ceiling wooden shelves of old cloth-bound books
Old textbooks are still the best source of diagrams. New ones are better at questions. We use both.

Dear Ms Wee,

I went from a D in my JC1 promos to an A in the A-Levels. You never once made me feel stupid for asking what a mole actually is.

Wei Ling T. H2, A (2025)

Dear Ms Wee,

Thank you for the red-ink notes after every test. For the first time, we knew exactly what Marcus needed to practise.

Grace L. mother of Marcus, O-Level, A1 (2025)

Dear Ms Wee,

The one-page summaries saved my prelims. The organic one is still taped inside my file.

Arjun S. H2, A (2024)

Courses and rates

Per hour, for the 2027 school year. Lessons are weekly, 1.5 or 2 hours.

  • S$90per hour

    O-Level & SEC Chemistry

Sec 3–4 · syllabus 6092 · one-to-one. The mole, salts and qualitative analysis, redox, organic chemistry and the practical paper.

  • S$100per hour

    IP Chemistry

Year 3–4 · one-to-one. Your school's scheme of work, bridged early into H2 thinking so JC1 feels like revision.

  • S$110per hour

    H1 Chemistry

JC1–JC2 · syllabus 8873 · one-to-one. Bonding, energetics, kinetics and the organic chemistry H1 papers favour.

  • S$130per hour

    H2 Chemistry

JC1–JC2 · syllabus 9729 · one-to-one. Organic mechanisms, equilibria, electrochemistry, transition elements and Paper 4 planning.

  • S$70per student

    H2 small group

Saturday mornings · three students at most. The H2 course above, at a shared table.

  • First lesson: a 90-minute diagnostic at half the usual rate.
  • Travel: included in central and eastern Singapore. Online costs the same.
  • Billing: monthly in arrears, by PayNow or bank transfer. No registration fee, no GST.
  • Rescheduling: free with 24 hours' notice; one month's notice to stop.
  • Notes: the full bound set is included from the first month.

Questions parents ask

  • How much does chemistry tuition with Ms Wee cost?

One-to-one lessons are S$90 an hour for O-Level, S$100 for IP, S$110 for H1 and S$130 for H2 Chemistry. Small-group H2 classes of up to three are S$70 an hour per student. Travel in central and eastern Singapore is included; there is no registration fee and no GST.

  • Do you teach the latest H2 and O-Level Chemistry syllabuses?

Yes: SEAB 9729 for H2, 8873 for H1 and 6092 for O-Level, including the new SEC Chemistry paper from 2027. I revise every set of notes each December, after reading the latest examiners' reports.

  • Where do lessons take place?

At your home in central or eastern Singapore, at my study near Bukit Timah Road, or online with a shared whiteboard. Most JC students choose the study, where the past-year papers are.

  • When should my child start chemistry tuition?

Ideally at the start of Sec 3 or JC1, before the first weak test rather than after it. I also take exam-year students from the March holidays while places last.

  • Do you offer a trial lesson?

The first lesson is a 90-minute diagnostic at half the usual rate, with no commitment. If I am not the right tutor, I will say so and recommend someone who is.

  • How many students do you take each year?

About twenty-five, so I can mark every script myself within 48 hours. Places usually fill by early December; after that I keep a short waiting list.
