Neighbours talk

What regulars and first-time cake orderers wrote after collection day.

“The ondeh-ondeh cake for my mum's 70th: the aunties asked for the shop's name before we lit the candles.”

Sharon T., Marine ParadeTwo-tier birthday cake

“Tea-break boxes for our town hall, 90 pax. On time, allergens labelled, and the invoice was in my inbox that afternoon.”

Arjun K., Paya LebarOffice catering

“Best sourdough in the east. Dark crust, open crumb, and they will slice it for you if you ask nicely.”

Wei Jie L., Joo ChiatSaturday regular

“My son has a nut allergy. They went through every ingredient with me and labelled his box clearly. That's rare.”

Kaya first, then bread

Crumb & Kaya started in 2016 in a Marine Parade HDB kitchen, where Joanne Lim sold her grandmother's kaya to the neighbours in recycled jam jars. Her husband Daniel, then a hotel pastry chef, began baking sourdough on his days off, mostly so the kaya had something worthy to sit on.

In 2019 we moved into a 1920s shophouse on Joo Chiat Road. The deck oven sits where the old provision shop counter used to be, and the first tray goes in at 4 am. We still stir the kaya by hand every morning, and we still sell out most days. No pork or lard has ever come through the kitchen door.

Good questions

Still unsure? WhatsApp us a photo of what you have in mind. A real baker replies.

How far ahead should I order a celebration cake?

Order at least 48 hours ahead for our 6- and 8-inch cakes, and 5 days ahead for two-tier or fully custom designs. Weekend slots fill first, so order by Wednesday for Saturday collection. A 50% PayNow deposit confirms your slot, and you pay the balance on collection or before delivery.

Do you deliver, and how much does it cost?

Yes, island-wide from Tuesday to Sunday. Cake and pastry delivery is a flat S$15 per address, and catering delivery with set-up starts at S$25. Orders above S$150 deliver free. You choose a two-hour window when you order, and we message you when the driver leaves Joo Chiat.

What is in an office catering box, and what is the minimum?

Each box feeds one person. The breakfast box, from S$12, has a mini croissant, a kaya bun, cut fruit and a juice. The tea-break box, from S$15, adds a pandan chiffon slice and a savoury bake. The minimum is 10 boxes with 3 working days' notice, and every order comes with a GST invoice.

Are your bakes halal?

We are not halal-certified. Our kitchen uses no pork, no lard and no alcohol, and we buy butter, cream and chocolate from halal-certified suppliers wherever we can. If your event needs certified halal food, tell us when you enquire and we will say so honestly rather than guess.

Do you have eggless, vegan or nut-free options?

Some. Our country sourdough and rosemary focaccia are vegan, and any celebration cake can be made eggless for S$8 more. We are not a nut-free kitchen, because almonds and pecans are used every day. Tell us about allergies in the order form and we will label your box and go through each ingredient with you.

When should I come for the freshest bakes?

Come between 7:30 and 10 am for the widest choice. Sourdough is out by 6:30 am, croissants at 7:30, pandan chiffon at 10 and sticky buns at 11:30. Kaya croissants often sell out by 2 pm at weekends, so pre-order the day before if you need a dozen or more.
